Outside Adaption of Shakespeare
Finding an adaption of one of Shakespears plays wasn’t easy for me, although there are hundreds out there. With some encouragment and suggestions from my peers, I finally settled on Romeo and Juliet, the movie adaption made in 1996 starring Leo DiCaprio and directed by Baz Luhrmann. This was by far the best adaptions of Shakespears that I could have picked. What was cool about this movie is that it took place in modern times, yet still produced the same story of Romeo and Juliet. The setting was in California, in the middle of gang violence, wich sparked my interest. The characters were kept the same and I was suprised that the movie was extremely close to the actual book. I liked how the director choose to replace swords with guns in the movie. It was a cool new perspective on the play. The director also choose the dialog to still be in “shakespeare talk”, which kept the reality of the play. In all, I thought the movie was great and well performed. Personally, I hate Leo Dicaprio, but I guess he was okay in this film. The idea of putting shakespeare’s plays into modern times was well excuted in this movie. I would like to find out if there are any other Shakespeare adaptions that have been made into modern times.
